(More customer reviews)We have been on a journey to find a great, stylish and functional counter depth refrigerator. We are replacing a perfectly fine Kitchen Aid side by side that we put in a second home. First, we chose a Samsung side by side, but were not satisfied with it's refrigerator temperature. We set it at 34, but it never seemed cold enough. Milk was never "ice cold" as we were accustomed to. We started monitoring the temperatures, and it was typically around 38-43 degrees. Samsung was unable to remedy this issue, even after sending out a new replacement. Then we chose a GE Profile model, but it was a similar scenario, with wide temperature swings between the setting of 34, and 44 degrees, so a return of the GE was in order after service was unable to remedy it's large temperature swings.
Now, onto the Electrolux. This was a favorite from the start when we were shopping, but we were scared off by some reviews. We decided to go for it anyway, and are pleased with that decision, so far. However, the first one delivered did not cool at all. A service tech was dispatched immediately, and he found that there was a broken line from the compressor, due to damage in shipping, no fault of the unit, and all the refrigerant had escaped. The dealer brought the GE back until another Electrolux could be ordered and delivered.
Upon recieving the second Electrolux, it is performing nicely. Internal temperature is as stated on the Wave Touch Panel at 34 and -4 degrees for the freezer (which, by the way, you can set to show the refrigerator and freezer temps at all times). The units appearance is of good quality, being stainless steel on all sides, sturdy handles, and a modern appearance with Wave Touch Controls, which are easy to use. The doors are simple to align or adjust if needed.
The interior of this unit is 22.6 cu/ft, so as counter depth goes, it is decent. With edgeless glass shelves, ball bearing glides on all drawers, a large temperature controlled drawer with digital programmed settings, 2 good sized slide out bins, and exceptionaly well done LED lighting, this unit's interior is impressive.
We especially like the temperature controlled drawer, which can be adjusted from 28 to 40+ degrees. The drawer is large enough for party platters, and can keep fresh meats at near freezing, or beer can be kept at a very nice 28 degrees, or wines at a favorite selected temperature. The ice maker does take up a fair amount of space, but for ice and water in the door, it is a worth while sacrifice.
The icemaker has had some negative reviews, but so far ours is fine. The cubes are rounded, with a divit. I'm not sure why this is considered "Drink Friendly", but they are nice. One issue is that the cubes seem to come out with some vengence. However, by simply putting your glass or ice bucket close to the dispensing chute...problem solved. We have seen no melted ice puddles in the catch basin. Water dispensing is simple, and functional. We have only had this unit for a few days, so I can't comment on ice production quantity, but it is supposed to be better than most, per Electrolux specifications.
The freezer has 2 deep slide out bins, and 1 shallow one, with dividers and smooth ball bearing slides. One of our wire dividers does not stay in place, but that is no big issue at all. Space is good, and well utilized. Lighting in the freezer is excellent.
If I listen closely, I can hear the unit running, but sound is not obtrusive or noticably louder than any of the other units we have had recently. I would say it is quiet.
Pros: Operates at accurate temperatures set, huge slide out temperature controlled drawer, Exceptionally well done LED lighting and appearance, Wave Touch Controlls, functional use of space. Looks and feels high quality. We finally have really cold milk again.
Cons: High end of price scale, Ice maker takes up some refrigerator space, and some door storage.

(More customer reviews)have to give a disclaimer: did not purchase on amazon...we chose hh gregg. but amazon reviews are what everyone reads, so i figured i'd post here.
this is a gorgeous fridge. while it was in our home (we had it a week), everyone commented on it. we went with the actual stainless vs. titanium because we were warned the titanuim, when scratched, peels off and is irreparable.
anyway, the fridge never cooled. things froze on the freezer side (but we are not sure of the actual temp...our thermometer doesn't go that low). i noticed funny smells in the fridge and used our instant read thermometer to check the temp (it has a probe that you can stick inside while a digital read stays outside). it was only getting to the high 40's while set at 37 (37 is what it came set at...the instructions say don't mess with the temp for 3 days). we lowered the setting after the 3 day wait, with iffy results, and finally set it to the lowest setting you are able to (32 degrees) and the inside temp ranged from 37 (rarely) to 44 (mostly) even after the door was closed for hours. 44 degrees is not cold enough for milk freshness for me, so i called lg. they assured me that their models all have a 10 degree range from the set temp (!!), but gave me a number for local service. when i called, and explained the situation, i asked the service people, "does a 10 degree range sound right?? we can still return it, and are not sure if we should even stick with lg as a brand" they said (and remember, this is the LG recommended person!), "whirlpool". we returned the frige (hh gregg has a 10 day return policy, thank goodness)and bought a diff brand.

(More customer reviews)I first bought one of these for my father for Father's Day. You should know he's a very cynical guy and I kept my fingers crossed that it would meet with his approval! He and my mother often host parties, and he regularly serves ice-blended drinks made in a regular blender (i.e. stawberry daiqueris). His regular blender often left ice chunks that clogged the straw and remained in the bottom of the glass once the drink was finished. Being the cynical perfectionist he is, I bought him the Hamilton Beach Wavestation to see if it would work better. I chose this over the Back-to-Basics smoothie maker because of the poor quality reviews it gets on many sites.
The Wavestation is AWESOME! There is absolutely NO ice chunks, and no hand-stirring necessary because of the "wave action" mixing. Basically, the shape of the container and the blades create a vortex that continually pulls the top of the mix downward, unlike a typical blender that mostly just mixes what's in the bottom.
My hubby and I decided to buy one of these for ourselves too, mostly for fruit slushies for the kids (we don't entertain the way my parents do!). This is, in my opinion, the best smoothie maker option on the market.
NOTE: At first my dad complained that really thick mixes wouldn't come through the front dispenser and he had to pour them. We found this to be true too, but the pouring worked extremely well (no spills). Then I read in the instruction booklet that with thick mixes, try turning ON the machine, dispense, then turn it off again.

It arrived in an undamaged box, but the motor assembly had broken loose from it's mounts and was rattling around inside the case. There were also plastic pieces loose inside. I have to think it is a badly made product if it can't make it through UPS's system without breaking inside. I followed instructions to get return & refund info and Heartland America responded promptly and courteously. The refund was processed promptly too. My only complaint about Heartland America is that I had to pay all shipping charges. I think they should have paid for the return shipping.

The juicer was ok, but the shredder shot my cabbage across the counter, til I found a really big bowl (it's a 2 man job in the infomercial). The third time I used the Bullet, I tried making some dough. The motor overheated after about a minute, then smoke poured out of the machine. I scraped out the dough and used my KitchenAid to finish the job (easily I might add). Fortunately the motor worked again after it cooled down. Check other sites you'll find this and other worse issues to be common problems - including poor customer service. Save your money. This product is not as advertised.

We did all the recommended cleaning, descaling, and using a paper clip to clean the exit needles. Nothing seemed to help. Called Keurig tech support. They stated that since we bought the item online and not from a store that they would not honor the warranty. I just feel for the price they charge for these machines it should last longer than 6 months.

My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute of America and "Culinary Artistry". If you love to cook and entertain, this is a great item to have in your arsenal, I love mine.
After I read the book "Amuse Bouche" I knew that I needed one of these little gadgets to add to my collection. When I received this I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had more applications than I knew about.
You can use this device to make an espuma, gourmet sauces or flavored cream in a flash. An espuma is a foam prepared from a puree, coulis, cream, or juice. If you are trying to cut back on the fat this tool can be a big help. I like the Pineapple Espuma that is pineapple juice thickened with gelatin and a little powdered sugar. It makes a nice light treat that I use as a bed for mango chunks. Now fruit for dessert doesn't seem so much like deprivation.
You can also take a warm strained sauce and foam that. The booklet that comes with the device has recipes for a Curry Sauce and for Hollandaise. Any strained sauce would work. To keep the sauce warm you place the whipper in a 165-degree bain-marie.
If you want a decadent treat to top your coffee try this one. Heavy cream, a little powdered sugar and some caramel syrup. We did this one night and everyone raved.
For really fluffy chocolate mousse put the prepared mousse in this and see what happens. You get the fluffiest chocolate mousse you have ever put in your mouth.
If you are trying to reduce the additives and preservatives that your family consumes this makes a wonderful plain whipped cream. My husband likes it when I add cocoa powder and make him chocolate whipped cream.
If you are one of those people that love a good kitchen gadget give this one a try. I have really enjoyed playing with it. Just by adding a little "gas" to my cooking suddenly everyone thinks that I am a culinary genius.

Cold Drip Coffee and Tea Maker, 8-Cup Review

(More customer reviews)My brother gave me this as a Christmas present and I've had it for over a year. It makes great coffee and looks wonderful on my kitchen countertop. Unfortunately, I banged one of the glass parts and cracked it last week. It still works, but I'm looking for a replacement piece before the crack spreads too much.
Avoid this if you need something that isn't easy to break, but otherwise it's really cool!
Update: I called the company that made this coffee maker today. They are sending a replacement part via priority mail. Hence the 5 stars. Great coffee, great look, great customer service.

This coffee maker is gorgeous and would make a lovely addition to your kitchen. Ice and water are placed in the top jar, and by regulating the dripping water through the valve in the center, coffee is steeped and ends up in the carafe at the bottom of the tower. Through a unique 3 hour process using pure ice water, ice drip coffee produces a unique flavor not found in regular brewed coffee. It's easy to use. Just put the water and coffee grounds into the brewer and you are ready to go. A permanent ceramic filter mechanism is included and is available in a brown stain finish. This coffee maker holds 32 oz. By slowly brewing your coffee with ice water, the harsher oils in your ground coffee are not brought out. The final brew is a lot mellower than a regular brew machine.

(More customer reviews)Just got this fridge on 3/24/08 and noise when compressor is running is off the charts. Space divisions inside are poorly designed but there's not much choice in small apartment size refrigerators. I may have to send this one back because of the noise.

Sno-Knife Roof Snow Removal Tool Rake Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased a Sno-Knife half-way through winter and was pleased with it. However, I found it difficult to use from the ground. The pitch of my roof is 4/12 and, after attaching several extensions to get far enough from the house to get the proper angle, I found the Sno-Knife awkward to use. I then used the Sno-Knife (with one extension) from a ladder leaned against the eaves of my one-story house. This worked well for me, but some people may not be comfortable on a ladder in winter. I was very impressed how quickly the Sno-Knife slid snow off my roof (I only used it on fairly wet snow). I also was impressed with how I could remove snow at an angle to the side, so it did not slide onto me (I would guess that Sno-Knife is better at this than other roof-clearing products). Sno-Knife should be easier to use from the ground on steeper roofs, but question its use with two-story houses.

Green Star GS-1000 Juice Extractor Review

(More customer reviews)I've been juicing since the early 1990s and more recently, as a certified raw foods associate chef, have been preparing a wider range of juicer recipes including pates and ice cream from frozen bananas. I have experience with Green Star, Champion, Juiceman, and several other juicers, and have read quite a bit about various models of juicers. If you are going to be juicing a lot of greens such as kale and parsley, the Green Star will give you a better and more nutritious yield than any juicer on the market. It far exceeds masticating juicers such as the Champion in this regard, as well as centrifugal juicers such as the Juiceman. A huge benefit of Green Star is that it juices wheat grass, so you will not need a dedicated wheat grass juicer. It's also amazingly quiet, far quieter (and a bit slower) than my Champion. And like the Champion, it does a great job with pates, frozen ice cream, and other recipes requiring a homogenizing blade, also known as a "blank." With a slower speed, the juice does not heat up as much as with a Champion and oxidizes slower.
So is there a catch? Yes. There are far more parts to assemble, disassemble, and clean than with a Champion. I'm reminded of the time when my brother was a child, he asked to borrow my father's watch, and my father said, "sure." A few days later, my father wanted his watch back, and entered my brothers room to find a bazillion little pieces on the floor: gears, springs, etc. My brother explained that he wanted the watch so he could take it apart, but not to worry he said, "I'll put it back together." My father said, "don't worry about it, you can keep the watch." When I take apart a Green Star juicer, I always think of this story because it has so many more parts than a Champion. (Although fortunately, the Green Star is far easier to assemble and disassemble than an analog watch.:-) At the Living Light Culinary Institute where I trained as a raw foods chef, when we made pates and banana ice cream, we always reached for the Champion, not the Green Star.
In deciding whether to purchase a Green Star juicer, consider whether you are going to be juicing a lot of greens and/or wheatgrass, and whether you're really going to take the time to disassemble, clean, and assemble about a dozen parts each time you use it. If you're not put off by that, then I highly recommend the Green Star. If you are mostly considering a juicer for carrot juice, fruit juices, banana ice cream and pates, then I would steer you towards the Champion. If you want to use a juicer for all of the above and can afford and have the space for both, then I enthusiastically recommend both.
Note that there are 3 models of Green Star juicers, of which the GS1000 is their most basic model. The GreenStar.com website explains the various accessories that come with or can be purchased with each. Accessories such as pasta makers and mochi makers are available for purchase with the GS1000, but are included with the GS3000.

Blendtec The Professional's Choice 1560-Watt Total Blender Review

(More customer reviews)This is a powerful blender, and is comparable to the VitaMix. I love the square design of the container, because it is easy to clean - way easier to clean than the VitaMix, and the blade at the bottom is not sharp, so I don't nick myself when cleaning the bottom of the blender. It is also much easier to scrape the blended goodness out of the bottom of the blender. But I don't like the lid design. The lid is flat and sits flush against the top of the blender. It gets splattered from the force of the blended ingredients. Makes a mess when you open it. This is a real problem when blending in between adding ingredients. Also, the plunger sometimes IS needed - even with a BlendTec, although Blendtec says it is not needed because of the variable speeds on its blender settings. There are times when I wish I had the plunger to just push things down while the blender is on. Instead, I have to take the lid off, which is dripping all over with blended goo, thus making a mess, so I can stir the ingredients because there is no plunger to push the food down into the blades like the VitaMix.
I have owned a Vitamix for 15 years, and it has proven to be a workhorse. The Blendtec seems to be just as strong, and I welcome it to my kitchen. It seems to do an even better job of grinding grains than the Vitamix. No "dry" container is needed. You just use the same container for both wet and dry ingredients. You don't really need a grain mill if you have the Blendtec, as it really does a very good job of blending grains and dry beans very quickly. It also makes nut butters almost instantly.
Overall, the Blendtec is extremely powerful, and meets my needs for what I use it for - I do daily green smoothies. I just wish it had a different lid, and a plunger.
