Aroma AYM-606 8-Cup Digital Yogurt Maker Review

Aroma AYM-606 8-Cup Digital Yogurt Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Aroma AYM-606 8-cup Digital Yogurt Maker was delivered to my house this morning. I put it to work about 2 this afternoon, and am very pleased with the results. This being my first batch, I expect some adjustments will be necessary. I used whole milk, but did not heat it to 180 F as the instructions suggest, as I'd read in several other sources that such isn't necessary. I took the milk down to 110 F (the instructions said 115, but I heard that higher temps could kill the bacteria,) added a couple tablespoons of sugar to the milk, and then added 3 tablespoons of Greek Yogurt (sans gelatin, etc.) along with a couple tablespoons of cold milk (as the instructions suggest) and mixed the lot thoroughly. A ladle made quick work of putting the mix in the cups, and I felt certain that they would be well heated by the design of this unit.
The interface couldn't be easier. Power it up, the digital display comes on. Add hours and minutes desired, and press the Start button. The countdown begins, the unit keeping it at the right temperature, then shuts itself off when it's done. (This last is what is lacking in many other units under $50.) Next time, I'll set it for 10 hours instead of 9:15, to firm it up a bit more, and probably add vanilla extract to some of the cups.
That there are 8 cups is a pleasure. The tops screw on quite readily. I will probably want to get another set of cups so I can make a new batch before the old one is gone, but that's the case with any yogurt maker.
It's been a couple of months that I've been looking at the various models, wanting automatic shut-off and preferring some sort of active interface over the standard "oh, just push the power button and then come back to it when the time is out." This model has given me everything I wanted, and at $30 including shipping, I couldn't be more pleased. What's more, I'll now be enjoying natural, healthy yogurt, instead of the gelatin and extra "stuff" in commercial yogurt. The first batch was quite creamy and tasty. Seems pretty certain it'll just get better as I get better at it. Thanks, Amazon and Aroma!
P.S.
1) Cook for LESS time, not more, to set the yogurt up and have a smooth, less tart taste. So, using EuroCuisine's extra firm starter (and bringing the milk up to 180 this time, why not follow the directions) I got very thick, creamy yogurt in just 7 hours.
2) I phoned Aroma, got a woman who told me that the extra set of cups is backordered, and will be available in a month. That's just about now. They are $10 a set, from Aroma's office in the States.
3) The Full line can be exceeded successfully. Otherwise, use half a cup less milk so as not to waste it.
Still luvin' it!

Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker Review

Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker

Look...making yogurt isn't that compicated. All you need is a good starter culture, a stable and appropriate temperature and clean equipment so you get the proper cultures growing. The Salton 1-quart does a beautiful job and you can't beat the price. If you've never made your own yogurt before, this is the unit to buy. Don't spend tons of money on a piece of equipment that does nothing more than keep the milk warm for a few hours. Realize, it is much easier to just buy yogurt at the supermarket. But if you don't like keep buying little plastic containers, and if you don't mind going to just a little effort to make your own foods, you'll enjoy making yogurt. I like to use milk straight from the bulk tank at a local dairy farm and either organic Stonyfield (NH)or organic Butterworks (VT) yogurt as a starter. Homemade yogurt doesn't always have the homogenous and solid consistency of store-bought, but I've had very good results (quite comparable with commercial yogurts) with the Salton, plus I can use whatever flavorings I want from real maple syrup to my favorite jams. I even use the yogurt in place of sour cream. The possibilities with home-made yogurt are almost unlimited!

Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Maker Jars, Set of 8 Review

Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Maker Jars, Set of 8

Have both these and glass yogurt containers. Give me the glass hands down any time any where. The lids that screw on and off with the glass ones just seem to function better and easier. These may take up a tad less room in your fridge as they are narrower and taller over all but glass seems cleaner and I can't say enough good things about the glass jars. Also I will reach for the kerr or ball 4 ounce regular lid jars when I need an extra yogurt jar or two over these once again. I find the plastic lids on the acrylic jars hard to remove without disturbing the yogurt. Yes I like my yogurt with a firm non stirred up texture. Otherwise it goes into smoothy style drinks and it doesn't matter. Each to their own but glass is my cup of yogurt and choice...these plastic ones now sit down in the dark basement shelf...waiting quietly at least. PS you can get plastic screw on caps for all regular canning jars and also most mayo plastic lids fit them as well. But by all means MAKE YOGURT no matter what your preferences of tools be.

Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker Review

Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker

So, I stole it from the Yo-cheese folks - I bought their cookbook!
This is the simplest and best device for making yogurt cheese. It makes yogurt "cream" in 2 hours, and yogurt cheese stiff enough to make a cheesecake overnight.
A few details. If you fill the device full of yogurt, you need to dump the whey after about 1/2 hour as it gets full. After you have drained the yogurt, empty it by up-ending it into a bowl with a larger mouth than the device, otherwise you waste some of the cheese scraping it out with a spoon.
I use the yogurt cheese to extend mayonaise and sour cream. I've made a lovely low-fat cheesecake with it, mixing it it 2/1 ratio with neufchatel cheese. I have used it in white sauces, and it makes them creamy and yummy!
We bought this to incorporate yogurt cheese into our diet to got lower fat and reduce saturated fat because of cholesterol concerns. It's a great device and it's never not in use at our house!

Waring Pro YM350 Professional Yogurt Maker Review

Waring Pro YM350 Professional Yogurt Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked this up at a B&M store because I couldn't find the Cuisipro yogurt maker locally, and I didn't want to wait for shipping.
Overall, it's a great yogurt maker. Very easy to use, and it makes delicious yogurt. I really like that it comes with two different sizes of jars, so you can choose to make either individual servings or two larger amounts. Also, mine turns itself off when the cycle is done, although I can't find mention online or in the instruction book about an auto-off. The black and chrome matches my other kitchen appliances, so I don't have to hide it away with my other few white gadgets that don't match the rest of the kitchen.
The one issue I have with this yogurt maker: The base is large enough to hold 7 of the single-serve jars. The recipes in the book that comes with it makes enough for 7 jars. But it only comes with 6 jars. This is a little frustrating, as you end up wasting some of the milk mixture when you use it.
Replacement jars are available for order if you call Waring's customer service, and I plan on buying an extra set, anyway, so I can make the next batch before the first is used up. But I am really annoyed that they don't even give you enough jars in the first place. So now I will actually have to order 8 to make two sets of 7.
Otherwise....It's a great product.

This works beautifully! Thanks to the large 2-quart capacity, now I can make enough yogurt to last a week and avoid using all of those store-bought plastic yogurt containers. Note: The recipe provided by Euro-Cuisine is not as good as the one from Diet for a Small Planet, which--doubled for the 2qt capacity--makes a delicious yogurt with a much thicker consistency.

Cuisipro Donvier Electronic Yogurt Maker Review

Cuisipro Donvier Electronic Yogurt Maker
Average Reviews:

After reading Mirielle Guiliano's memoir about food, entitled "French Women Don't Get Fat" and feeling annoyance over the loss of Total Greek Yogurt on the shelves of my local Whole Food (this is temporary), I decided to buy this yogurt maker and simply make my own.
The procedure is a simple one; heat some milk until bubbles appear on the side of the pan and steam actually rises; take off the stove and pop in the included thermometer. When the milk temperature lowers to a specific window indicated on the thermometer, add some milk to 2 tablespoons of purchased plain yogurt or yogurt starter. Mix and then add to the milk in the pan.
As the yogurt maker has slots for 8 containters with lids, simply pour an equal amount of the milk from the pan, put on the lids, cover the yogurt maker and plug the machine in.
The machine sits on a counter; I advise parking it in a place where the digital controls are not interferred with as just one little push will turn the whole thing off. I set my yogurt to "cook" for 14 hours. The result: Great consistancy and flavor that matches store bought without the preservatives and other additives.
The machine includes includes instructions on how to make flavored yogurt; it seems simple, but I have not tried it.
Bottom line: this machine does the trick with little or no fuss. I also purchased the yogurt cheese maker which will allow me to turn my homemade yogurt into a spread that I can use on bread in the AM. Doesn't get any better!

Reliable and temperature controlled, this electronic appliance makes great-tasting homemade yogurt using only the freshest ingredients and without artificial additives or preservatives. The yogurt maker can make up to 6 cups of yogurt with the option of creating up to eight different flavors at a time. The taste of the yogurt will vary depending on the milk used, the type of starter used, how long the yogurt is left to set, and any flavoring added. Experimenting with these different elements allows for creating favorite personal recipes.
The included thermometer stirrer takes the guesswork out of making yogurt at home. To use, place the stirrer in the milk until the red bulb is immersed. The "add starter" level on the stirrer indicates when the milk is exactly the right temperature to add the yogurt starter. The electronic yogurt maker also features a digital LCD display with an electric timer, a warning beep that sounds 5 and 10 minutes before the end of the cycle, and an automatic shut-off function at the end of the cooking cycle. The unit's safety features include its polarized plug to reduce the risk of electrical shock and a short power-supply cord to reduce risk resulting from tripping over a longer cord.
The compact unit comes with a heater base, a thermometer stirrer, eight jars with lids, and a unit cover. To clean, the yogurt maker should not be immersed in water, simply wash by hand with a mild detergent and a damp cloth. The thermometer stirrer, the cover of the yogurt maker, and the jar lids should also be washed by hand, but the yogurt containers are dishwasher-safe. A user manual with recipes is also included. The electronic yogurt maker measures 6 by 11-1/2 by 4-1/2 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

This is a fun product! You do need to freeze the bowl before use, so as long as you realize that, you should be good. And my first batch was the Vanilla Bean. It was/is to die for. Had I read the directions THOROUGHLY, I would have seen that this particular recipe requires the custard (which you make from scratch) is to be chilled thoroughly prior to mixing it in the machine. This recipe takes a little time but boy is it worth it!! I am sad that the other guy left a bad review for the machine when his beef was with the company's customer service before even ORDERING it. I like the first guy's idea of buying an extra freezer bowl (if you have the storage space). They include recipes for ritas, gelattos, slushies, floats, sorbet, etc. LOTS of fun!

Tribest Yolife Yogurt Maker - YL-210 Review

Tribest Yolife Yogurt Maker - YL-210
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a firm believer that you need no special equipment to make yogurt. I have made yogurt many times using a double boiler and a styrofoam "beer cooler" as is available in various sizes at grocery and service stations every summer for about $4. (see my comments at the end)
However, if you want a maker "off the shelf" this is excellent. It has the following pluses:
* It's instructions actually allow effective production of decent yogurt without further ado or special "mixes" or extras.
* It's got the "high top" lid which allows fairly easy 92oz (3qts) of yogurt to be made at one time.. (I live alone and easily eat one to two quarts of yogurt a week.. it cut me out of my "ice cream addiction* haha as it satisfies my "cream crave"). My "thick yogurt method" takes prep time and the prep is the same whether I make an ounce or 3 quarts.. and it lasts easily 2-3 wks in the refrigerator.
* Although I would not rate it "superior" quality, it is decently made and has a 5yr warranty.. definitely above the norm.
* This makes inexpensive yogurt. (under $0.75 a quart for me) You can also use soy milk, goats' milk, etc to make your yogurts as well as add sweeteners and flavorings for variety. Check the internet for many variations. There are good sources.
* The small jars it comes with are handy if you're making a small amount or if you are doing it for children who all want different flavors.
* It's easy to clean (the small jars are glass.. the hardest items to clean). Rarely do you need to do much cleaning to the unit itself.
My method:
To make yogurt I simply put milk in a double boiler over slowly simmering water for about 30 minutes. I do this because I like THICK yogurt and the "fill and heat" method just doesn't make it thick like I like it. The yogurt I make is considerably stiffer than soft peak egg whites, though not so stiff as standing peaks.
After the heating (which loses about 10% of the volume by evaporation) I put hot tap water in my sink, and cool the pan to about 115 fairly quickly. Pour this into jars through a strainer to take out any scalded bits or solids from your mix.
I then pour some of this in a short glass and add a generous tablespoon of a previous batch for each quart of yogurt you're going to make (see note at end if you have no starter). Mix this starter bit until its smooth and divide among the jars you are going to use for the yogurt.
If you are going to add flavorings, this is the time to do it.
Put these jars in a warm place. It can be electric like this Tribest Yolife Yogurt Maker - YL-210 or just use a few jars of HOT FAUCET water as "heaters" in an insulated area. That's it. Yogurt cultures for some reason are VERY SENSITIVE to being stirred or shaken, so culture them where they won't be disturbed after you add the starter.
In about four hours you'll have yogurt that has firmed (leave it up to 12 hours if you like a sharper tasting yogurt.. added time doesn't make it thicker). Put the jars in the refrigerator until chilled. It will keep at least 2 weeks. It can be frozen indefinitely as well as making "yogurt ice cream".
Just as an added note, you can thicken the yogurt by adding about 1/4 cup powdered milk per quart to the milk before you heat it or by adding pectin or gelatin as a thickener. Thickeners likely will be required if you are using non-fat products.
If you like "greek style" or "yogurt cheese" simply take the yogurt you have made and pour it either into a fine cloth bag or a fine mesh strainer over a draining jar in the refrigerator for a day or so. You may also try the Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker. I haven't used it, but it should work. The liquid "whey" will drain off leaving a thicker, creamier product. I don't do this normally, but if done in my style it approaches the consistency of soft cream cheese.
*NOTE: If you don't have leftover yogurt for starter, I started my first batch with Dannon PLAIN (read on the side that it has active cultures and NO OTHER INGREDIENTS except milk on its contents) This can be frozen easily to provide "starter cubes" in an ice cube tray then bagged until you need it. For my tray each cube is about 1Tbs. Just remember to thaw them before adding to your yogurt batch. Also, though it is very expensive, there are "starter powders" available to provide the active cultures.

Euro Cuisine Automatic Yogurt Maker - YM100 Review

I read a lot of reviews for the YM80 before buying and people complained about the lack of an automatic shut off. For an extra $10 this machine provides the shut off. My first batch of organic yogurt came out great. I think it is better for our health and environment to be eating yogurt out of glass jars and not adding a plastic container to the dump every time we eat yogurt. I made plain yogurt and added 2 tablespoons of dried organic milk. The yogurt was firm and nicely presented. It was somewhat tart so I added a tablespoon of honey just before eating, this added a little sweetness without taking away the yogurt flavor. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to have some control over what they are putting in their system. You can make this yogurt with skim, 1%, 2% or whole milk, organic milk or local milk, or even goat's milk. The shut off valve is convenient for people who don't want to keep track of when to unplug the yogurt machine. Although turning it on right before going to bed seems like about the right amount of time for a batch of yogurt.
